Acupuncturists will understand this

I believe that the meridians encircling the sexual organs is very relevant, it causes a twisting in that area, the external genitalia and uretha become as one.

I was experiencing a 1/2 hour ago an intense tightness and my legs twisting and knees being tight together.

Using my massager i massaged the area before my bottom, couldnt put it in between my legs as wouldnt part, but after a few seconds massaging my knees parted and released.

I now feel loads better. I hope I have described it as well as possible.

Yes I have a problem with my spinal cord, but the meridian is also very relevant as I think both affect eachother.

meridians are so relevant

As Chiropractic treatment benefits had slowed up I decided to see a Neuro physiotherapist, he has established that my spinal cord is nnot right, I have now been referred to a Consultant for rehabilitation re spasm etc. on 10th Oct. the muscle in my right leg is extremely tense and I may benefit from botox or baclofen treatment, which makes sense. The tightness includes my right side incredibly tight this morning I had tension in my back abdomen side and leg, I tried to relax it and couldnt even tried my deep tissue massager, got up in the end, I had no pain as such just intense discomfort. After a few minutes of getting up I was aware that my foot also tightened so I went for a wee. As soon as I did this there was a slight release, this I believe is because of the bladder merridian.

the merridian is so relevant as does have some effect. my next move might be is to have yet again acupuncture but possibly this time along the gal bladder line as this may be a factor. I am also going to sk my Doctor to now prescribe baclofen as this may also help. I dont know whether any of this will help, but I wont know unless I try and that I will do

Pain is an indicator

As progress with John my Chiropractor had slowed and also with the acupunture. I decided to se a Neuro Physiotherapist, who had been highly recommended to me, during todays session he maneovered my left hip in such a way it caused me an intense pain one of which I have never experienced before in my life, I have never broken a bone or dislocated a shoulder, but I imagine this would be a similar type of pain. I consider pain to be a good sign of progress, as we now know that it is a problem area needing attention.

So progress now can happen and thats good

without health money means nothing

As I am slowly regaining strength and I intend to finaly walk. I feel anger that I received all the pain, I have gone through stuff that no man or woman should be subjected to. And then I think they will pay (meaning the NHS) I will sue big time.

Then I start thinking rationally yes I do want some kind of monetary compensation, for the money treatments have cost me, and for future Dental work I need as my gums bled for years until my Atlas was re adjusted,. And compensation for my children not having a fully functional Mum, we all missed out on stuff that we could have done together. But other than that then the most important thing is to help others like me regain their health.

Because bottom line is "money means nothing if you dont have your health"

The following has never been challenged Wow!

 Why Chiropractic
"I want to Thank Dr. Amy Osenbaugh. I have gone to several chiropractors who have told me I would not be walking if I didn't keep going to them. Another told me my shoulders were going to freeze. I was seeing him three times a week.
I saw Dr. Osenbaugh on TV, and I made an appointment. I have never felt better. I go every three weeks now and my husband can't believe the difference in my attitude. You do not have to live with pain, the way I was."

WHAT IS THE ATLAS?

The ATLAS is the very top vertebra of the spine, also known as the first cervical vertebra. The skull, also known as the head, sits on the atlas. The atlas surrounds a lower extension of the brain, referred to as the brainstem. If the atlas is out of place, or misaligned, it may pinch off nerve supply that is trying to go from the brain to every part of the body or pinch nerves that are coming from the body into the head (see Diagram 1 & 2). These pinched nerves may create SYMPTOMS and disease, such as digestive problems, heartbeat irregularity, difficult breathing, or muscles spasms.
If the ATLAS displaces, tilts, or misaligns, it creates a domino effect throughout the rest of the spine (see diagram 3). The second cervical vertebra, also known as the AXIS, tilts with the third, the fourth, the fifth, and so on. This puts a twist or curve in the whole spine, which creates imbalanced and unlevel hips, shoulders, and legs; pinching nerves along the spine. This can create symptoms throughout the whole spine.
When the atlas is level, the second vertebra is level then the third, and fourth and on down the spine. The shoulders, hips, and legs will become level- as you will visualize by observing the comparisons on diagram five. This is how getting the atlas adjusted & brought to level can make the lower back and other areas feel better. The adjustment just works its way down the spine correcting other areas in the process. The spine on the left of diagram 3 suffers spinal misalignment which may pinch nerves and lead to various symptoms. The spine on the right, with the atlas level, is straight which means no pinched nerves and less chance of symptoms. It's that simple!

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
Chiropractic is an all natural, conservative approach to health. Our main objective is that every NERVE of your body is working at 100%. Each NERVE in your body has a purpose. One nerve makes your eyes see. Another lets your fingers work. Another makes your heart beat. Another makes your stomach digest, and so on. EVERYTHING in your body works because of the nerve supply to it.
The BRAIN is the "control center" for your body. It sends messages down your spine and out each individual nerve to make your nose, thyroid, lungs, liver, stomach, legs, and so on work correctly. If, at any place along the spine, there is a vertebra (bone of the spine) out of place, then the bone can pinch a nerve cutting off nerve supply to the inner ear, the sinuses, the gallbladder, the pancreas, the kidneys or any other organ in the body. If any piece of the body is not getting 100% of its nerve supply, or energy, then that part of the body will not work at 100%. Its maximum potential will then be compromised. It's that simple. Look at the following comparisons in Diagram 1 and 2.
Diagram 1 Diagram 2
Main source of power
Breaker Box
 Brain
Atlas surrounds the brain stem
toaster blow dryer heart lungs
curling iron electric razor stomach arms, hands, shoulders
coffeemaker TV gall bladder liver

VCR computer bowels kidneys
alarm clock vacuum bladder reproductive organs

If there is a worn electrical wire or an overloaded circuit in the wiring of your home (Diagram 1), then one or more of the items in your home may not work correctly. The actual electrical problem could be at the top of the diagram at the main source of electrical power or even at the breaker box, but you would see the problem further down into the diagram when your coffee maker, blow dryer, and vacuum wouldn't work. You might check to make sure that the appliance didn't break, then check the wall outlet, but if they're O.K., then the breaker box that all wires & electrical currents must go through needs to be checked out and possibly reset or turned on.
The same is true with Diagram 2. The brain controls EVERYTHING in the body. The brain does this by sending "messages" down the spine through the brain stem, and out through the nerves to everything in the body. Compare this to the electrical example in Diagram 1. If something in the body is hurting or not working correctly, there are several options as to what's causing the problem. Is the problem in the organ, skin or muscle? Is the problem at the outlet of the spine (vertebra) where the nerve comes out of the spine? Or is the problem at the top of the spinal cord where all the nerves come down from the brain underneath the atlas bone? All nerves must go through the atlas before they reach any other area of the body. So, instead of "treating symptoms in all areas of the body"... Why not treat the cause?
Are you experiencing irritable bowels because there is something wrong with the actual bowel tract or because an abnormal supply of nerve flow to the bowel is creating bowel tract spasm or contractures?
Are you experiencing headaches due to a lack of aspirin or because of an inadequate amount of nerve flow between your brain and your body?
Are you having sciatic pain down the back of your leg because there is a muscle spasm in your back or because there's a bone out of place putting pressure on your sciatic nerve... creating muscle spasm in your back as well as the excruciating and sharp sciatic pain down the back of your thigh, knee or into your foot?
See the chart of effects of spinal misalignment to see all the results of pinched nerves at all levels of the spine.
Do you want to spend the rest of your life treating and chasing symptoms... or eliminate the cause of the problem NOW, so you can begin living life without the fear of the pain returning when the pain medication wears off.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Diagram 3

Body Imbalance vs. Body Balance

When a patient comes in for their initial consultation, two tests are done to determine if the doctor thinks they are a candidate for our care. These are actually two tests you could do at home to see if a family member of yours needs chiropractic care.
TEST 1: Check the patients balance and posture. We take a look at shoulder height, hip height, and leg length (see diagram 3). The shoulders and hips should be level from left to right, when the patient is standing. When the patient is lying on their back, on a flat and hard surface, the legs should be the same length. It's not that one leg grew shorter than the other, but if there is a hip that is higher than the other, that high hip will pull the leg up making the patients leg length unlevel.
TEST 2: We check the nerves at the base of the skull by gently pressing into the nerve roots and muscles at the base of the skull (head) . This is the area at the very top of the neck and spine. There should be no pain experienced or "bumps" felt in that area if there is no nerve interference in the upper cervical spine (neck). If you sense any pain or discomfort or the doctor locates tender bumps upon feeling at the base of the skull, a spinal misalignment (subluxation) has been discovered. This misalignment at the top of the spine works down the spine creating other misalignments in the spine like dominoes as you can see in diagram 3.
If these two tests indicate an imbalance in the spine and nerve interference, the next logical step is taking X-rays.

WHY DO I NEED X-RAYS?

X-rays to a Doctor of Chiropractic are like the blueprints necessary to a contractor. It's just not possible to give you the best possible healthcare without those "blueprints" of your spine. Advancement in technology has made X-ray exposure and dosage very minimal. Without X-rays, we would be guessing about your health - which we will not do.
The X-rays we take of the cervical spine are specialized for the specialty that we do. Three specific X-rays on your neck are taken to get a three-dimensional view of YOUR specific misalignment. With the specific work we do, everyone's adjustment is tailored specifically to each patient. The more specific the adjustment, the longer the patient will hold their adjustment, and the sooner the patient will feel better.

HOW LONG DOES CHIROPRACTIC CARE TAKE?
Initially, your chiropractic care will be more intense and frequent. When we start working with patients, it's a muscle training process. The muscles have held the vertebra in the wrong place for a period of time and it's going to take time to teach the muscles the new position.

As the body starts to hold the adjustment and the patient starts to heal, the visits become less frequent. Some patients choose to discontinue care when the symptoms subside, but most patients realize that stopping care could put them back where they started. Maintaining your chiropractic care by getting checked on a regular basis is much more cost and time effective. If you wait for the symptoms to reach their maximum pain or discomfort again, that intensive care program would have to be done all over again. Patients who maintain their chiropractic care often have more energy, sleep better, get sick less often, and feel better all over. Chiropractic isn't just about "getting out of pain" or "not hurting", it's about BEING HEALTHY and learning your full health and performance potential!
Diagram 7

Diagram 7 shows that, after a patient gets adjusted, it takes time for the body to heal and that there are ups and downs in the healing process.
The straight line across the top shows how a healthy, well-adjusted person goes through life feeling great, but may have a day now and then of not feeling great due to lack of sleep or irregularities in diet. Overall though, chiropractic maintenance keeps a person feeling great!
The crooked line going down from the left shows a persons life without chiropractic care. Health begins to decline and symptoms come about. Occasionally the person has a better day due to certain exercises or medications, but since the problem does not get fixed, overall health continues to decline over the years.
Then you can see where chiropractic care begins to improve on bottom of diagram 7. There are ups and downs along the way as the muscles of the body learn to hold the spine in the new position. As you can see, it is not an overnight fix, but the period of healing is not as long as the period of declining health was before chiropractic care began.
Acute accidents (towards the middle) don't usually take as long to heal as chronic problems. Acute accidents include recent auto accidents or falls. Healing also occurs quicker the younger the patient is when they begin care.
Look at diagram 7 and see where you are at in your life. Could you benefit from chiropractic care?

COMPARISON: MEDICINE vs. CHIROPRACTIC
Before symptoms ever begin, the body begins the deterioration process. It takes time for damage to occur internally before the symptoms start. The difference between medicine and chiropractic is in what these two doctors do once the symptoms begin.
Medical Approach:
ALLOPATHIC
"Parts Focused"
Invasive surgery or drugs to treat SYMPTOMS
 Chiropractic Approach:
WHOLISTIC
"Whole Body Focused"
Conservative gentle approach to treat the CAUSE
1. Doctor gives patient a drug to treat symptoms  1. Doctor adjusts patient to remove nerve pressure to eliminate the cause of the problem.
2. Cause, which still exists, worsens-sometimes without symptoms  2. Nerve flow through the body is reaching maximum potential, eventually 100%
3. More medications are given to reduce or eliminate symptoms of a worsened problem or side effects 3. Symptoms subside, overall function of all systems within the body improve in function
4. Overall health declines  4. Overall health improves and increased resistance to disease is reached by restoring proper neurological communication system-wide

Stress overload,

It would be interesting that when Doctors used to diagnose on 2nd episode, how many people went to Doctors with a odd sensation or numbness, and the Doctor suspected ms,  but it wast mentioned as a possibility, and those people recovered changed the stresses in their lives subconsciously and carried on as if nohing had ever happened and never having  stress overload in their lives ever again.

They are diagnosing too soon, not giving the patient time to recover totally.

re my previous post

Update so far

It feel as if I have a really tight piece of elastic down each legs that stops them from straightening and it is also tightly wound round my right hip.

When my bladder is full that affects the nerve in the left leg as it then crosses over to the right. and my right leg becomes uncomfortably tight and this I think happens because of the bladder meridian.

I mainly get burning pain from the sciatic nerve when  lay down and usualy I get up and it passes within 5-10 minutes. Last night I didnt get up but tried kneeling up to relieve it, I did it 3 or 4 times but I didnt get out of bed.  I ignored the pain and stretched through it. It seemed to work breaking the habit of getting up every few hours through the night. So hopefully I will try this method again tonight and concertrate on relaxing through the pain if that makes sense.

This seems to be my main problem, my dexterity is a little off but nowhere near as bad as it has been in the past.

When I think back to how I was, I cant believe how many improvements I have made, just little things at once but they all add up.

We are all about flow

our bodies are all about flow, blood flow, how the urinary systems flow, meridians flow, spinal fluid flow, digestive system flow and air flow in and out it all needs to work naturally one depending on another, dont you just love how the human body functions. and a tiny bone between mind and body called the Atlas can disrupt it all, if it is out just a fraction.

It can be pulled out of alignment by physical or psychological trauma/stress. How crucial that small part to our make up is.-so important

yes I am in denial

The worst piece of advice anyone can give to someone diagnosed with the condition ms, is to tell them that they must accept diagnosis.

This is the last thing that they should do, as it forces them to not investigate alternative possibilities for something that just doesnt make any sense at all, and that is because ms does not exist as it is discrided today.

Doctors Neuros and Nurses must not even suggest it. And on the ms society website it is constantly mentioned to others who are finding it hard to accept this unacceptable nonsense of a condition.

So I say DENY away.

posted sept 2011

I have today tried to reregister onto the MS Society boards at present unsuccessfully, using my old user name Fee001. I have asked them to confirm in writing that a lifetime ban has been levvied against me.

They wont reply, but at least I've asked. I find it frustrating when one poster has been told that he or she needs to accept their diagnosis, this is exactly what no should be advised, and is very dangerous to do so.

and I just have to watch, so wrong!!!!!!!!!

CANDIDA is just a lawsuit waiting to happen. This is big, very big and handling it will be a challenge to any Government. Obesity is at epidemic proportions, when Candids involvement is realised, anger is going to be rife.

Candidas responsibilities

If you google mostly anything from Autism to Cancer with Candida you will get a result, diabetes 2, rhumatism it is responsible for a great deal.

The keeping this a secret from the general public by the medics causes many problems that have to be dealt with by worlldwide health systems.

Its a self fullillingg prophecy, a catch 22, a continuousy cycle. break the cycle you have a CURE to much.

my mess My mess/ms

I sat in my wheelchair, afraid and alone,
I hate being here I want to go home,
The thought of just sitting, for the rest of my life,
Cuts into my heart, like a long jagged knife,
Is this it, right now, how life is to be,
But luckily not, not happening to me,

Suicide was no option, that road I wont take,
But consider just this, ms maybe fake,
I focussed my mind on alternative routes,
Eventually I’ll succeed, in giving the boot,
My first port of call, a physio called Louise,
Who actually listened and did humour me,

And thank God that she did, acupuncture she gave,
Now that wheelchair sits there, I wont be its slave,
As time did pass by, the better I’d feel,
I’m liking this hand, a much fairer deal.
I’m back on my feet, with my walker ahead,
But I now know I wont, be forever in bed,

Its all so complex, a hell of a mess,
This stupid disease, that they all call ms,
I will not conform, there are answers I seek,
I will not just sit, shut up and be weak,
I will continue my quest, for however long,
They need not prove me right, but just prove wrong,

Stress is the worst thing, to let it all grow,
The effect it sure has, only I seem to know,
Stress feeds through your day, from morning to night,
It wont let you rest, its always in sight.
Stress feeds off stress and then feeds my mess,
It gets bigger and bigger and never gets less.

Its hard I now know to break into this house,
But my stress now lays quiet like some kind of mouse,
The bladder’s the key,  break the link in that chain,
And now I can watch it, go off with its pain,
When the link has been broken, you begin to live life,
Ms didn’t break me, and make me its wife.

I have taken it slow, at my kind of pace,
Not rushed or fought it, as is complex like lace,
But now that I see, now what hides it all,
I want to tell others, just give them a call,
Prognosis alone, causes all kinds of stress,
But strip it away, and there is no ms

Now this is progress

Thursday I saw privately a Neuro Physiotherapist called Volker, because my spinal cord is wrong he wants me to be referred to a Consultant Dr in Rehabilitation tone/spacticity management, Volker is going to make Dr Haboobi aware that I am adverse against the "ms" word. In an ideal world he would have me admitted. I have since told him that will not be a problem this end.

Although I am sore from treatment, its a happy sore.

This is what I have always wanted, not to be seen as an ms statistic, but just as ME.

Epstein Barr

This subject comes up quite often on the mss site, Glandular fever also the Herpes virus there is some kind of link, perhaps lays dormant in the system and resurfaces as fatigue, I dont know there is some kind of link, but what it is I dont know, perhaps I'll do some digging, its worth a look.

Well looked and hey! bingo, cronic fatigue.

Chickenpox too lays dormant, how many links to this chain I ask, is it also linked to fatigue, I'll look and check again. Here goes.

Hey presto, chickenpox can cause fatigue also.

lyme cause swollen ankles

Swollen Ankles With Lyme Disease

X
Eric Smith
Eric Smith has been a freelance writer since 2007 and has published articles on various websites. Smith specializes in a wide variety of topics, particularly health, travel and business. He has a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Oakland University.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria that is spread by tick bites and leads to inflammation from the bacterial infection. Inflammation, also known as swelling, may develop in a patient's ankles or other joints.
  1. Joint Inflammation

    • According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, people infected with Lyme disease may develop joint inflammation as the disease progresses into an advanced stage. Patients with Lyme disease who experience swollen ankles or other joint inflammation should get help from a doctor as soon as possible.

    Severe and Migratory Joint Symptoms

    • Individuals with untreated Lyme disease may develop severe periods of joint swelling and pain that persist for a few weeks or months, according to the Mayo Clinic. This severe pain and inflammation may also shift between various joints in the body such as ankle or knee joints.

    Other Symptoms

    • Lyme disease may cause fever, headaches and muscle pain. Lethargy, a stiff neck and itching all over the body also may occur with this condition.

    Treatment

    • Doctors often prescribe antibiotics to fight the bacteria that cause Lyme disease infections. Patients may take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen to relieve joint symptoms.

    Complications

    • Patients with an advanced stage of Lyme disease may have long-term arthritic joint inflammation and abnormal heart rhythms. Difficulties with concentration, memory and sleeping may occur with advanced Lyme disease.

Symptoms of lyme disease

Symptoms of Lyme disease

Chronic Lyme disease

Chronic Lyme disease is a syndrome (a collection of symptoms) that is experienced by some people who have had Lyme disease.
The symptoms of chronic Lyme disease are similar to those of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, and it is thought that it might be triggered by late-stage Lyme disease. More research into this form of Lyme disease is needed.
The symptoms of Lyme disease usually fall into three distinct stages - early, mid and late. You should only experience symptoms of mid and late stage Lyme disease if you are not treated with antibiotics during the initial stage of the condition.

Early stage Lyme disease

The symptoms of early stage Lyme disease develop three to 30 days after someone is bitten by an infected tick. The most common symptom of early stage Lyme disease is a distinctive circular skin rash, known as erythema migrans.
The rash develops at the site of the tick bite and is often described as looking like a bull’s-eye on a dart board. The affected area of skin will be red and feel slightly raised to the touch.
The size of the rash can range from between 2-30cm (0.7-12 inches) and in most people it expands over a period of several days or weeks. In up to a third of people with Lyme disease, the rash may be the only symptom experienced.
Other symptoms of early stage Lyme disease are flu-like and can include:

Mid stage Lyme disease

The symptoms of mid stage Lyme disease usually develop many weeks, or sometimes several months, after being bitten by an infected tick. However, they usually only affect people who were not treated with antibiotics at an early stage.
In untreated cases of Lyme disease, people will develop flu-like symptoms, such as aching muscles and tiredness. Some people may also experience two or three episodes of inflammatory arthritis (swelling and pain in the joints) which lasts for about a week. However, symptoms such as joint pain should eventually resolve even if they are left untreated.
In around 15% of untreated cases of Lyme disease, people will get neurological symptoms (those that affect the nervous system). These symptoms include:
  • numbness and pain in your limbs
  • temporary paralysis of your facial muscles - usually only one half of the face is affected; this symptom is sometimes known as Bell’s palsy)
  • impaired memory
  • difficulty concentrating
  • changes in personality
Some people may also develop meningitis, which is a serious condition where the meninges (the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) become inflamed. The symptoms of meningitis include:
  • severe headache
  • stiff neck
  • increased sensitivity to light (photophobia)
Seek immediate medical advice if you experience any of these symptoms.

Late stage Lyme disease

In a minority of untreated cases, the symptoms of late stage Lyme disease can develop after many months, or even years. As with mid stage Lyme disease, the symptoms can affect both the joints and the nervous system. The symptoms can include:
  • long-lasting (chronic) joint pain and swelling
  • pins and needles
  • tiredness
  • impaired memory
  • difficulty concentrating
  • depression
  • blue or red rash, leading to thinning of the skin (atrophy) which is more common in older women

They need to listen and learn from it

We have lefft the responsibility for our wellbeing up to Doctors, running to them for allsorts expecting them to prescribe a pill to fix it. This is where we need to rewind. Our everyday health is our responsibility, there is no need for drugs just alternative/holistic maintenance.

We cant keep feeding our bodies with rubbish, drugs or alcohol and expect it to cope, because it wont. We need Doctors to recognise Candidiasis and to treat it, as I suspect many many of us us have it unaware that we do so.

The Mind Body and Spirit have to be cared for and respected, yet again premoting Eastern phillosophey, the West may have mocked and laughed but that has been their biggest most catastrophic mistake.

I hope that changes are made to make everybodies future better especially the young

Sunday 4 September 2011

Its only a matter of time

It is only a matter of time that others ask the very same questions as I have.

Friday 2 September 2011

They are making us sick

The more I learn the more worried about everybodies well being I become.

Bottom line is they the medical profession are making us sick (this is nothing to do with ms) by giving us antibiotics and not recognising Candidiasis/candida albicans they are then making us sick, from nail fungus to possible cancer, breast or prostate.

And antibiotics are probably being prescribed for something that the Candida is causing in the first place. Its crazy but I think it happening,

My update

As I try very hard not to discuss anything negative here I have to but its a good negative in a way.

Just recently I have been experiencing chronic pain related to my sciatic nerve, usually in bouts of 72hrs at a time. It is a different pain though than the I was experiencing in my lower back due to the twisting of my spine that has gone. This is a burning pain.and has been constant but is a lot less today as saw physio and has made a difference.

I have now decided to see a man that has been highly recommended to me as being one of the best in his field. He is a neurophisiotherapist and I have arranged for treatment, As cost is an issue for me we have come to an arrangement.  So I am very happy. Because I have had to rely on my own judgement it will be nice to have an expert to help me. and that is a massive relief to me.

A site to visit. "thisisms"

There are some really good theories being discussed on above site recently, these are themindsets that need to be accessed, as we as a group (ms diagnosed) know an awful lot more than anybody has realised.

Some really good stuff many subjects, its really quite uplifting to watch and focus is not on ccsvi, and that allows others to speak.

I'm so pleased, they will now get somewhere as I have

I know off topic but very interesting, could it be Atlas related

Signs of aging may be linked to undetected blocked brain blood vessels
Many common signs of aging, such as shaking hands, stooped posture and walking slower, may be due to tiny blocked vessels in the brain that can't be detected by current technology.
In a study reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers from Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, examined brain autopsies of older people and found:
Microscopic lesions or infarcts — too small to be detected using brain imaging — were in 30 percent of the brains of people who had no diagnosed brain disease or stroke.
Those who had the most trouble walking had multiple brain lesions. Two-thirds of the people had at least one blood vessel abnormality, suggesting a possible link between the blocked vessels and the familiar signs of aging.
"This is very surprising," said Dr. Aron S. Buchman, lead author of the study and associate professor of neurological sciences at Rush. "The public health implications are significant because we are not identifying the 30 percent who have undiagnosed small vessel disease that is not picked up by current technology. We need additional tools in order to identify this population."
In 1994, the researchers began conducting annual exams of 1,100 older nuns and priests for signs of aging. The participants also donated their brains for examination after death. This study provides results on the first 418 brain autopsies (61 percent women, average 88 years old at death).
Although Parkinson's disease occurs in only 5 percent of older people, at least half of people 85 and older have mild symptoms associated with the disease.
Before the study, researchers believed that something more common, such as microscopic blocked vessels, might be causing the physical decline. The study's autopsies found the small lesions could only be seen under a microscope after participants died. The lesions couldn't be detected by current scans.
During the annual exams of the nuns and priests, researchers used the motor skills portion of a Parkinson's disease survey to assess their physical abilities. Researchers observed and rated the participants':
•Balance
•Ability to maintain posture
•Walking speed
•Ability to get in and out of chairs
•Ability to make turns when walking
•Sense of dizziness
"Often the mild motor symptoms are considered an expected part of aging," said Buchman, who is also a member of the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center. "We should not accept this as normal aging. We should try to fix it and understand it. If there is an underlying cause, we can intervene and perhaps lessen the impact."
