About NUCCA
NUCCA is a unique form of chiropractic spinal health care that uses a specific procedure focused on correcting a small misalignment of the upper neck known as the Atlas Subluxation Complex. This subtle correction ultimately restores optimal balance to the entire spinal column. Because the spinal column protects the central nervous system that controls and coordinates all body functions, good spinal balance is critical to good health. Extensive research and clinical studies show that improved body balance effectively reduces stress throughout the body and helps to relieve pain and stress. Although the NUCCA correction is performed on the neck, it affects the balance and function of the entire body.NUCCA is an acronym for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. The technique was developed in the 1940s by Dr. Ralph Gregory and Dr. John Grostic Sr. Their work proved very successful, allowing them to arrive at a more accurate method of rebalancing the body. The NUCCA organization was formed in 1966 to conduct educational seminars. The organization is actively involved in keeping the technique both as precise and as effective as possible. Certification standards are extremely high and ongoing research continually adds to the education of practitioners and the benefits seen by patients.
The NUCCA Procedure
The focus of the NUCCA correction is at the very top of the cervical spine, where balancing of the head atop the neck is possible only with very precise nerve and muscle control. The atlas bone (also called C1) is the small donut-shaped bone between skull and neck, surrounding the brainstem, with joints unique to the rest of the spine. It is in this region of the spine that we have great range of motion, but at the expense of some stability, making us vulnerable to connective tissue damage which leads to misalignment of the atlas. When atlas is out of place, the orientation of the spinal cord in the spinal canal can be affected, interfering with communication between the brain and the body. In this situation, the brain is unable to balance the body effectively in space and muscles begin to chronically tighten to compensate for the imbalance, causing tension and pain. Miscommunication between brain and body can also affect systems other than the musculoskeletal system, causing a shift from optimal health in any area of the body. NUCCA doctors have consistently seen positive changes in multiple body systems including digestive, reproductive, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune and excretory. The NUCCA chiropractor uses postural measurements to assess the outwardly visible effects of an atlas subluxation. Then very precise x-rays of the cervical spine are taken and carefully analyzed to determine the patient's specific atlas misalignment. A correction vector is calculated and the patient is gently adjusted by the doctor.
For the correction, the patient lies on one side while the doctor exerts a gentle pressure on the side of the neck at the level of atlas. There is no abrupt thrust, twist or crack, just a subtle force entering the body as atlas is returned to its natural place.
The doctor then takes post-adjustment x-rays which illustrate the effectiveness of the calculated vector and how best to correct misalignment at future visits.
