I am a firm believer of enhancing the effectiveness of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet with the use of additional supplements. The goal of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is to heal the intestines and digestive system by bringing it back into balance. This state of imbalance is known as Dysbiosis. Here is some information about it:
When the intestines contain the balance of good and bad bacteria that is optimal for good health, they are described as being in a state of symbiosis. Alternatively, dysbiosis (a contraction of the term “dys-symbiosis ”) occurs when this balance is upset. Dysbiosis can result from a deficiency of good bacteria or an overgrowth of harmful organisms. In either case, organisms that are not usually predominant in the intestines, such as unfriendly bacteria, yeast (Candida) and protozoa, actually induce disease by altering nutrition patterns in the body.
There are many supplements available which help to bring the digestive system back to a state of balance faster than just using the SCD alone. My “go to” supplements are:
1. Intestinew which heals any active ulcerations. It’s made from therapeutic doses of L-Glutamine which is an amino acid that heals the lining of the intestines. Usually, you just take this for about 30 days, then you’re all healed and done.
2. Fish oil which is a natural anti-inflammatory.
3. Liquid Acidophilus which helps to boost the good bacteria in the intestines. Acidophilus Pearls when traveling or for times when the liquid is not convenient or impractical.
4. Some sort of anti-yeast supplement which helps to kill off the bad yeasts and micro-organisms .
Candidastat is my favorite anti-yeast supplement as I’ve found it to be the most effective. However, Olive Leaf Extract is now running a close second. I had heard about it having beneficial effects on digestion and having anti-fungal properties, so I decided to give it a try. I’ve been taking it for the past few months and am just about done with the bottle. I usually take one or two at night before going to bed, washed down with some water.
Here is the information about the supplement:
About Olive Leaf Extract as it pertains to digestion

Olive Leaf has a scientifically backed reputation for helping to protect against a wide variety of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic invasions without harming beneficial bacteria. It also supports several circulatory needs at the same time, including blood pressure balance, healthy arteries, normal heart rhythm and free radical protection. Additionally, it serves the urinary and digestive systems.
Olive Leaf is an effective killer of harmful bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi. As these die off in your gut, the areas they occupied on the linings will be exposed. It is helpful to start the process of rebuilding the gut lining within days of taking Olive leaf (with healthy foods). This will not only assist your digestion, and in so doing, ensure more nutrients are absorbed into your bloodstream for rebuilding damaged cells and organs elsewhere in the body, it will discourage new microbes from colonizing your system again. The rebuilding process can take up to three months.
Olive leaf tea in specific has been shown to aid in the creation of appetite, digestion and Detoxification. In addition to promoting activity and regularity in the gastro intestinal tract (GIT) olive leaf tea provides an internal cleansing action that helps to eliminate harmful yeasts and bacteria. Toxins can be anything from food additives and pesticides to specific foods that induce a reactive response by the GIT.
