Caprylic acid is a medium chain fatty acid with unique properties. It is best known as a dietary supplement useful against an overgrowth of Candida albicans. This new animal study shows that it turns on liver activity in a way that stimulates the clearance of cholesterol and bile acids from the digestive tract, helping to improve the lipid profile and lower cholesterol.
It is quite common that individuals with an overgrowth of Candida have elevated cholesterol. This may be due to the stress that Candida toxins are causing to the liver or it may be as part of a natural defense system wherein LDL cholesterol is being used as a backup method to help clear excess Candida toxins that are in the circulation.
Improving the flow of bile and more efficiently clearing cholesterol is also good for cardiovascular health. Indeed, extra fiber is used for a similar reason. However, rather than “mopping up” the extra like fiber, caprylic acid helps stimulate the clearance process via the liver. This means that caprylic acid is synergistic with extra fiber for cardio health.
The fact that caprylic acid is also a potent anti-fungal indicates that the use of it is especially good for the individual with a history of Candida issues who may also have elevated cholesterol. Lowering the amount of Candida toxins in the circulation is also good for cardio health.
